Back Pain & Injury Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy for back problems that helps you recover stronger
Understanding Back Pain
Back pain can range from sudden, acute episodes to persistent, chronic conditions, significantly impacting your life beyond just physical discomfort. It can disrupt daily activities, interfere with sleep, and even affect your mood. In some cases, symptoms like sciatic or a tension headache may signal deeper spinal issues that shouldn't be ignored.
It’s easy to assume that back pain must mean serious damage, especially when it lingers. But in reality, most lower back pain isn’t caused by anything severe and rushing to get an MRI isn’t always necessary. Seeing a physiotherapist first can often be a faster, more effective way to get answers and relief. Our highly skilled physios are trained to identify the root causes of your pain. Whether you’re dealing with a recent muscle spasm or an old injury flaring up again, we’re here to help you find not just short-term relief, but long-term solutions. We’ll also equip you with a personalised action plan to manage your condition, build resilience, and prevent future episodes, so you can move forward with clarity and confidence.
Common Types of Back Injuries
Acute Muscle Spasm
A sudden, involuntary tightening of the back muscles, often triggered by overuse, poor posture, or abrupt movements. Muscle spasms are usually short-term but can be intensely painful.
Herniated Disc
Occurs when the soft inner gel of a spinal disc pushes through its outer layer, usually seen on an MRI. Herniated discs are often an incidental finding and in many cases, are not the root cause of back pain.
However, if the herniated disc compresses on nearby nerves, this can cause sharp pain, numbness, or weakness, typically in the lower back or legs.
Sciatica
Not a condition itself but a symptom caused by compression of the sciatic nerve often due to a herniated disc. It leads to radiating pain that travels from the lower back down one leg.
Lumbar Spondylosis
A common diagnosis related to the normal age-related changes in the spine. It involves wear-and-tear changes in the discs and joints, which can cause stiffness, chronic pain, or nerve compression.
Scoliosis
A C-or S-shaped curvature of the spine, usually diagnosed in adolescence but can also develop in adulthood. It often appears as asymmetrical posture and may contribute to back pain, or restrictions in spinal movements.
Spinal Stenosis
A narrowing of the spinal canal that puts pressure on the spinal cord or nerves. Symptoms often include back pain and pain, numbness or weakness that radiates into the leg.
Fractured Vertebra
A break or crack in one of the spinal bones, often due to trauma or conditions like osteoporosis. It can cause sudden, severe pain and may require urgent medical attention.
Acute Neck Pain
While not always related to the lower back, neck pain can arise from muscle strain, poor posture, or nerve irritation and may contribute to tension headaches or upper back discomfort.

Causes of Back Pain
Back pain can stem from a wide range of triggers. Here are some of the most common:
Sitting hunched over a laptop or book for extended periods can contribute to or aggravate back pain. This type of discomfort is increasingly common due to the widespread use of electronics and sedentary lifestyles. Typically, the pain from poor posture subsides within a few hours or with movement.
A fall onto your back or tailbone can cause bruising, joint strain, or fractures. While mild pain may resolve quickly, ongoing discomfort or other back problems should be assessed by a qualified physio.
Lifting, bending, or prolonged physical effort can overwork the back muscles, resulting in soreness or strain. Without proper form or rest, this can lead to more serious injury.
Sudden movements or poor lifting techniques can stretch or strain soft tissue in the back, leading to back aches and pain. Physiotherapy intervention can help relieve pain and restore movement.
The discs cushioning your spine can bulge or rupture, irritating nearby nerves. While not all disc issues cause symptoms, they’re a common source of radiating back or leg pain.
Symptoms of Back Pain
Pain when Bending, Twisting, or Lifting
Discomfort When Lifting Heavy Objects
Back Muscle Stiffness in the Morning
Sharp, Shooting, or Burning Sensations
Pain Radiating Down the Leg
How Physiotherapy Helps with Back Problems & Injury
Our physiotherapists can create tailored rehabilitation plans and provide expert guidance to help you regain mobility, alleviate back pain, and prevent a recurrence.

Step 1: Thorough Assessment
Through detailed history-taking and clinical examinations, we aim to diagnose the underlying issues resulting in pain or injury.

Step 2: Individualised Management Plans
Based on the assessment and keeping your goals in mind, we develop a management plan tailored to your needs.

Step 3: Follow-up Care
We monitor your progress closely and adjust your treatment plan as needed, ensuring continued recovery and long-term results.
Back Pain Therapy Options May Include

Manual Therapy
This could be in the form of soft tissue massage and joint mobilisations.

Dry Needling
Acupuncture needles are inserted into or near trigger points to stimulate the muscles, causing them to contract or twitch, which helps relieve pain and improve movement.

Rehabilitative Exercises
Your physiotherapist will guide you in selecting the appropriate mobility, strengthening or stability exercises to aid in your recovery.

Shockwave Therapy
Depending on your condition, our physiotherapist may suggest other forms of therapies, such as shockwave therapy in Singapore, to help your recovery.

Such a positive experience at this clinic, can not rate highly enough - have been going regularly for 6+ months. The staff know their sh*t, are incredibly professional and friendly which is why I keep coming back.
I originally started seeing Gaya (physio) for pain management with my back which she quickly identified as linking back to ankle injury/surgery 6+ years ago. Gaya is ruthless in her technique but she knows what she's doing and felt so good after her sessions.
I soon then started seeing Lucy Warren (physio, pilates rehab specialist) who developed a rehab program to not only strengthen my back/core but help with realignment and strengthening of many muscles that had weakened over time as a result of this injury and have since seen great improvement in not only my back but overall wellbeing.

I am currently doing my physiotherapy with Dean. I went to him for chronic backaches. I wasn't able to stand up for too long without feeling the urge to bend and arch my back. Also, I can't sit for too long after which I have problem straightening my back. Dean has been very patient and able to pin point the correct spots which we began to work on. Thanks to him, my conditions have been improved greatly!

Senior physio Jade is incredible - she listens, changes treatment when something isn’t working, easy to communicate with, willing to fit you into her schedule and is very good at her job. She helped diagnose, treat (in conjunction with surgery) and recover from a slipped disk last year and I’ve never felt better. She’s my go to physio when anything feels wrong and she gets me back into shape to continue living my life. The facilities are close to the CBD and have tons of space for rehab and other training.

Experience was great, from the reception to the treatments. My physio, Nada was professional and detailed in diagnosing my problems. We had a structured programme across a few months that helped me change my bad posture habits and strength my body. These exercises are simple enough to execute everyday and it makes a whole lot of difference. Glad to say I'm finally rid of the pain I had!

Physiotherapist Nicholas Tan is incredible! I have been going to UFit for my sharp lower back pain for about three weeks now and have nothing but compliments for Nicholas.
To name one - Nicholas was very patient during the first Physiotherapy assessment. He accurately diagnosed the root cause of the pain and designed a set of exercises each session to alleviate the pain.
Within two weeks of session, I noticed a significant reduction in pain and feel better overall! :) I would recommend you to check out Nicholas Tan if you are looking to be free from pain.

I required physiotherapy due to lower back pain and was referred to Logan Smith at UFIT gym. In the first session with Logan, he very quickly diagnosed the problem and explained, in simple terms, what was causing the pain. Over the course of the next few sessions, I very quickly noticed a rapid reduction in pain, as well as an improvement in movement, and it was evident Logan’s treatment plan was working. After 10 sessions I can honestly say the pain has almost entirely disappeared and I am now carefully following his post-care plan during isolation and continuing to see improvements. I am confident I will be 100% fit in no time at all and only have Logan’s expertise to thank for this.
On a personal note, Logan is a decent bloke with an affable and trustworthy manner.
I only wish I sought his advice sooner – thanks again, Logan, for your help.

My physio is Lucie Lamprey aka The Miracle Worker. She helped me with a painful wrist injury from squash. I can hit those flat hard drives again. Thanks Lucie. She also helped me with a painful lower back problem that made it difficult for me to walk or bend. 1 visit and the back pain was 85% eradicated. Highly highly recommended. Keep it up Lucie. You are a blessing to people. God-sent really.
